The Dentist Just for Kids

Your Child's Initial Appointment

What to Expect From Your Child's First Visit

At All Smiles Pediatric and Adolescent Dentistry, we believe that a child’s first visit to our dental office should be fun, educational, and most of all make a positive impression. This approach allows us to provide the highest level of dental health care for your child. We want your child to feel comfortable and excited about coming to the dental office. We see our new patients on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursday mornings. Once your child is back in the chair, we prefer to go at a pace that allows for the child to be relaxed. Our preference is to provide your child with a cleaning, fluoride, X-rays, and the doctor’s exam. We understand that not all children grow and mature at the same rate, so we like to allow this to help us determine what needs are best met for your child.

Dr. Jim will gently examine your child’s teeth and gums for tooth decay and other problems. Also, we will teach both you and your child how to clean your child’s teeth properly, evaluate any adverse habits, and discuss in detail any concerns you may have.

Do I Stay With My Child During the Visit?

Many pediatric dental practices suggest that parents wait in the reception area while their child is being seen. Our philosophy is quite the contrary. We believe that helping parents support healthy smiles is a partnership involving you, your child, and our dental team. Communication to both parent and child about their total oral health is key to avoiding future complications and building great dental habits for life. For this reason, we love the opportunity of talking with you and your child together at their appointments and invite you to stay with your child during their appointments. There are some types of appointments where the parents will be asked to remain in a different waiting area for certain procedures such as conscious sedation appointments and general anesthesia appointments. These appointments do not allow for the parents to be back in the sedation areas.

"Best dentist ever. The office staff is friendly, and the kids always look forward to going to the dentist. We have gone to Dr. Steyer since both of my children had their first tooth."
